A 6-year-old boy has drowned in a river while crossing to School.
The incident took place on Wednesday, October 17, 2019 at Togodo, a farming community in the Eastern Region’s Yilo Krobo Municipality.
The body of the deceased –following a search by a joint group of police, NADMO and local divers, Tetteh Osmond is still to be recovered.
Togodo’s people, including school children and pregnant women, risk their lives every day to walk across the Ponpong River whenever it overflows.
Although the community has constructed a small wooden bridge on the river to help cross the river, it gets overwhelmed whenever the river overflows causing residents and school children to walk the river.
The recent heavy downpour has resulted in the river flood, so residents are forced to cross the water level below their waist while bringing food to the market center while pupils are “swimming” to attend school in a nearby community.
