Bukom Banku’s License Revoked By GBA

Until further notice, Brimah Kamako, popularly known as Bukom Banku, will see no boxing action in Ghana. This is due to the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) withdrawing its pro licence on a case of contract breach.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the GBA’s Disciplinary Committee on Thursday November 7.

Bukom Banku did not honour his deal with Box Office Promotions for a rematch with Bastie Samir who dealt him his first loss.

A source confirmed that the GBA Disciplinary Committee had revoked the licence of the boxer after a round of hearings finding that the former African light heavyweight champion had broken his deal with Box Office Promotions.

Banku and Bastie Samir signed a rematch deal on June 20, 2018 to fight each other. It followed a publicised bout of cruiserweight that saw Samir at the Bukom Boxing Arena on October 21, 2017 defeat Banku with a seventh-round TKO. For Samir, an Olympian, the win was important, because it was the only defeat of Banku in his professional career.

Bukom Banku was also ordered to pay 17,000 GHC to the Box Office Promotions CEO, Alex Ntiamoah, who paid the amount as part of the boxers ‘ training fee and purse.

Special permission to seek relief from the courts has also been given to the CEO of Box Office Promotions if the boxer fails to pay the amount due. The Promoter–Alex Ntiamoah is the same at the Accra Stadium on July 16, 2014, which attracted nearly 20,000 people, pulled off the national blockbuster grudge fight between Bukom Banku and Ayitey Powers (Michael Ayitey Okine).

With his special brand of broken English and sarcastic pronunciations in media interviews, Banku exploded into popularity in 2000.

Banku won light heavyweight titles from the African Boxing Union (ABU) and WBO Africa over the time. Banku hit the headlines in Ghana recently after winning his first off-country fight. He now has a professional record of 30 victories and a knockout defeat of 23.
