Coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum has come under fire from Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known as Countryman Songo, a former member of the Kumasi Asante Kotoko management committee headed by Nana Yaw Amponsah. He is accused of playing politics and being a hypocrite.
Countryman Songo responded to the club’s decision to release more than eighteen players by saying that the players are being “punished” because of their affiliation with Nana Yaw Amponsah.
He claimed that because Dr. Ogum believes the players have loyalty to Nana Yaw Amponsah, he is projecting his personal problems with her onto the players.
Countryman Songo cautioned Dr. Ogum about his conduct, saying he thinks life would return the favor by treating the players badly.
“He was lured to Kotoko by Nana Yaw Amponsah, who also helped him become a league champion coach. The group of players who won him his first league championship as a coach included the players who have since been dismissed.
“These players are pros, but he got involved in politics and shunned them because he believed they were Nana Yaw Amponsah’s guys and they wouldn’t play for the team. Despite the fact that Nana Yaw Amponsah signed them, he called them veteran players.
“At first, he preferred the players he brought to the club, but he went back to the more experienced players Nana Yaw had signed when he saw they weren’t playing well. He is of no use to Kotoko.
“He only engages in politics and deceit.” He will be dealt with by karma. Kotoko’s season was difficult due to political issues. They will keep struggling since the coach doesn’t have good intentions for the team,” he said on Adom TV show.
On June 18, 2024, Asante Kotoko declared that eleven players would be released after the Ghanaian football season of 2023–2024 concluded.
The club then announced the discharge of seven more players the next day, making eighteen players the total number of players the club had dismissed.
