English Player Kobbie Mainoo On Selecting England Over Ghana: “Playing For England Was A Dream”

Kobbie Mainoo, an English midfielder of Ghanaian heritage, has declared that his aim was to play for the Three Lions.

Ghana was keeping a close eye on Mainoo, but the Manchester United sensation decided to play for England.

Speaking prior to England’s second 2024 European Championship group match, he acknowledged that, although he is proud of his heritage, he had thought about playing for Ghana, his desire was to represent England.

“Although I’m proud to be Ghanaian, playing for England was always my desire. “Although the situation is code red, I’m glad to be here,” he remarked.

At the ongoing Euros in Germany, Mainoo made his competitive debut for England in a 1-0 victory over Serbia.

He had made four appearances for England since his first call-up in March 2024, the game being the fourth.

Leading Ghanaian football official Randy Abbey disclosed before Mainoo made his debut that the FA’s upper management had seen him.

According to Randy Abbey, a member of the Ghana Football Association’s executive council, “the Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams,” The Times said.
