Tom Vernon: Otto Addo Turned Down FC Nordsjaelland Prior To The 2022 World Cup

Before the 2022 World Cup, FC Nordsjaelland chairman Tom Vernon said that Ghanaian coach Otto Addo declined an offer from the Danish team.

Vernon disclosed that Addo, who was Borussia Dortmund’s talent coach at the time, chose to concentrate on his position with the Bundesliga squad.

“He declined my offer to become the head coach at FCN. Along with all the local coaches, I kept tabs on the careers of all those Ghanaian-born coaches, Vernon revealed to Joy Sports.

Vernon emphasized that Addo’s background negotiating several cultural contexts and his comprehension of Ghanaian and European mindsets made him a good fit for the position.

Addo was a 2006 World Cup representative for Ghana. From 2016 to 2017, he was Nordsjaelland’s assistant coach.

After leading the four-time African champions to victory against Nigeria in the final qualification playoffs, they were unable to go past the Group stage in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.

Addo, who was criticized for not taking the Ghana position on a permanent basis sooner, has now rejoined the Black Stars as their head coach.

His tenure started off spectacularly with two comeback wins in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Kumasi, as Ghana defeated Mali 2-1 and the Central African Republic 4-2 to tie for first place in Group I.
